SEED Grows in DUMBO

RENEWAL met with positive response from the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) Improvement District in Brooklyn, NY.  One of 56 business improvement districts in New York City, DUMBO was signed into law by Mayor Bloomberg in December 2005.  It is entrusted with keeping the community's public spaces, addressing public safety, advocating on behalf of DUMBO to public and private stakeholders, and marketing and promoting the area to attract new visitors and business.

Throughout April, DUMBO will continue its series of events and programs in conjunction with the neighborhood sustainability initiative, SEED (Smart Environmental Efforts in DUMBO).  These events will include a meeting of sustainable business leaders, an Oil Drum Art Exhibition, information sessions on sustainable practices, and a series of film screenings, at which RENEWAL will be shown.

Jane Kojima, Communications and Development Manager for DUMBO, had a chance to screen the film and sees it as a valuable tool for not only their SEED events in April but beyond as well.  DUMBO often hosts cross sector groups of all ages.  Jane suggested that RENEWAL could play an important role in their outreach to these groups.  Moreover, Jane also recognizes the ability of RENEWAL to break down religious and cultural barriers within their neighborhood and between DUMBO and surrounding neighborhoods through its interfaith approach.  Jane draws parallels between RENEWAL's subjects' faith and DUMBO's concern for their neighborhood.

While DUMBO does not have a large, explicitly religious presence in the community, they will be inviting leaders of faith communities from surrounding neighborhoods.

Below is the press release for DUMBO's SEED events in April:

City of Water explores the aspirations of public officials, environmentalists, academics, community activists, recreational boaters and everyday New Yorkers for a diverse, vibrant waterfront at a time when the shoreline is changing faster than at any other time in New York's history. The documentary features interviews with Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, US Representative Nydia Velazquez, MacArthur Fellow Majora Carter, author Phillip Lopate, Sandy Hook Pilots' Captain Andrew McGovern and others, and includes footage from Jamaica Bay, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and many other places on the waterfront.

The screening of City of Water is made possible by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and the Municipal Art Society and will be followed by a Question & Answer Session with President of Metropolitan Water Alliance, Roland Lewis, and the director of the film, Jasper Goldman.

RENEWAL is the first feature-length documentary to capture the breadth and vitality of America's religious-environmental movement. In rural communities, suburbs and cities, people of faith are rolling up their sleeves in practical and far-reaching ways. Offering a profound message of hope, RENEWAL shows individuals and communities driven by the deepest source of inspiration - their spiritual and religious convictions - being called to re-examine what it means to be human and how we live on this planet.

Throughout, RENEWAL attempts to paint an honest picture of how much work will be needed to stem the tide of environmental devastation. Its compelling characters and stories inspire the vision and commitment that addressing the challenge will require.
